David Sands Ten Commandments of Buying
- During 2007 we were voted “best retailer as voted by supplier” in the HIM Convenience Tracking Programme Awards, this being the second year in a row. We aim to keep this up! As a result, we try to treat our suppliers with every courtesy.
- We will try to avoid unnecessary meetings as we recognise that time is money, both ours and our suppliers. If we do have to have meetings – we will not keep our suppliers waiting and will offer refreshments.
- We will introduce new suppliers to our Directors, if available.
- New lines will be discussed by our operations team before being taken on.
- We will ask if there is a listing allowance and how our suppliers intend to help us promote the product in store.
- We will ask if the multiples stock the product and at what price.
- In order to compete on a level playing field we will ask for competitive prices payment terms and stick to them.
- Unlike many of our competitors, we do allow samples to be left with our buying team but only in moderation and they will be sampled by other staff.
- When we negotiate prices with our suppliers, we will check all discounts that are available, will ask what advertising allowance is available and whether the product should be listed in our in house leaflets.
- We will not divulge any trading agreements or terms to any person outwith the company.
